The history of the name of Carleton or Carlton is a common name for parishes. The Carle or Ceorl, meaning countryman, farmer or peasant and ton meaning town. Therefore Carleton is the countryman’s town. To differentiate the name of Carleton on a village, a further name was added so we became East Carleton.

Before we became East Carleton we would have been known as Norwich Carleton or Norwich by Carleton .
